Abstract
Student departure in higher education is a universal problem that has been studied extensively in many countries. It is a complex topic with several facets, encompassing both internal and external factors within the academic environment. Institutional abandoment in general, is the outcome of the combination various issues, such as student disillusionment with their chosen course, lack of motivation or clarity in setting objectives, personal problems or a sense of not belonging to the community of which the student is a part. This study aims to understand the potential correlations between the number of students of the Tutorial Education Program (PET) within the Physics undergraduate course at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and their retention within the institution. The analysis is based on documentary evidence, referring to the number of freshmen of the Licentiate and Bachelor’s program in Physics, between 2005 and 2014, utilizing the Vincent Tinto's evasion model (1993). The research findings indicate that the dropout rate is reduced when students feel acknowledged and integrated into a community, such as PET-Physics.
