CAST OF CHARACTERS

Abstract

While the score by John Kander and Fred Ebb (their other best known show is the even more adult and cynical Chicago) is wonderfully infectious, the story is perhaps a bit darker (and the dancing just a titch more risqué) than might be found in most community theater fare. In spite of its popularity, it really is not a musical that can be easily done well. The challenges, in music and choreography, but also especially in terms of acting, are different than what one might encounter when doing older musicals with more conventional plots. But done well, and cast with the right performers (as this production is), it does make for an engaging evening of theater, easily as engaging as more conventional musicals...and perhaps even a bit more thoughtful, as well.
