Abstract Sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS) is a synthetic organic compound that is prepared by the aldol condensation of methyl isobutyl ketone and 2-ethylhexanal, followed by sulfonation of the resulting alcohol. STS is the largest and the mo important class of synthetic surfactant used in medicine. It is utilized exclusively as an active ingredient with sclerosing effects. This treatment, called sclerotherapy, has shown efficacy in a number of conditions.
