Abstract
Transformed data presented in a meaningful way for users is information, whereas knowledge is the capability for actionable information. Knowledge sharing is among the major goals of academic communities, and therefore, the emphasis on knowledge sharing and management is the central issue for the academic libraries. It includes the process of identification, retrieval and potential utilization of knowledge to help the end-users at the times of their need. Portals render support to this knowledge management (KM) process. Knowledge portal or web portal is designed to support KM, and it facilitates transfer, storage, retrieval, creation, integration and application of knowledge in academic institutions. Libraries are the repositories of all forms of information resources for the knowledge base that supports academic curricula. A web portal with an appropriate link to the required information resources is an important tool for KM. This article discuss the web portal as a KM tool in academic libraries and outlines a design for a simple web portal with Hyper Text Markup Language to manage the resources of a library attached to academic institutions like school, college and university libraries.
