Abstract
Multimode antennas offering orthogonal operational modes can be applied at the mobile terminal in order to enhance signal reliability by diversity reception. Compared to conventional antenna techniques focusing on spatial diversity concepts, multimode antennas can be realized with reduced size requirements. In this paper a novel, multimode log.-per. planar antenna is presented that achieves the same diversity order as a spatial diversity configuration consisting of four antenna elements by providing dual-mode- and dual-linear polarized operation. With the advent of self-complementary geometries, the realized antenna covers a frequency range from 1 GHz to 6 GHz and is therefore well suited for multiradio applications
