More Hard Facts on Overdues

Abstract

A survey of public libraries from across the United States was conducted in 1983 to determine the relationship between overdues and activities designed to combat the problem. Several activities were significantly effective-restricting patrons with overdue materials, automating circulation, using a collection agency, and sending the first notice within 15 days of the due date. While many other activities are not effective, it is helpful to know that such activities can be abandoned without adversely affecting overdues rates. Trade-offs and implications for library management are discussed.
