Abstract

[English title and abstract below] Der Beitrag untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen einem diaristischen Erzählmodus und Verfahren literarischer Naturbeobachtung in Dara McAnultys Diary of a Young Naturalist. Die zentrale These des Beitrags lautet, dass in diesem Tagebuch Selbst- und Naturdarstellungen nicht nebeneinanderstehen, sondern sich gegenseitig bedingen. In Anlehnung an das Konzept der Ecobiography (White 2020) soll das Schreiben über Natur gleichzeitig als das (Er-)Schreiben eines Selbst verstanden werden – eines Selbst, das sich über ein In-Relation-Setzen zur erschriebenen Landschaft darstellt. Das über ein diaristisches Erzählen dargestellte alltägliche Leben des Protagonisten wird somit als ökobiografisches Coming-of-Age-Narrativ gelesen.   Observations of Nature and Observations of SelfDara McAnulty’s Diary of a Young Naturalist (2020) This article analyses the correlation between a diaristic mode of writing and literary observations of nature in Dara McAnulty's Diary of a Young Naturalist. The central argument is that in this Diary, representations of the self and of nature are not juxtaposed but are, instead, mutually dependent. Following the concept of ecobiography, writing about nature is seen as a simultaneous (re)writing of self – a self that presents itself in relation to the written landscape. The protagonist’s daily life, depicted in epistolary form, is thus read as an ecobiographical coming-of-age narrative.
