Abstract
A novel dead time compensation scheme for Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) drives is presented. Dead-time is essential to prevent short circuit of DC link in PWM inverters. This causes dead-time effect which results in output waveform distortions and undesired characteristics. This paper deals with a new dead-time compensation scheme where a different approach is used in inserting dead-time into PWM inverters such that it does not cause any effect due to the introduced dead-time. In this approach, dead-time is applied only for either one of the switches depending on the output current polarity, ensuring no DC link shortage. This technique ensures an accurate output voltage magnitude with no phase delays. Simulation and experimental results of the proposed method are presented to validate the effectiveness.
