A Case Study of Internet Addiction among Undergraduate Students of the University of Karachi

Abstract

The Internet serves as a medium not only in the transportation of information but also in connectivity. The boom in technology resulted in dependency on the internet at work, home and social interactions. Internet addiction can be described as the excessive or inadequately controlled urges, desires, wants, or fixation to use gadgets having internet access. It was a cross-sectional study. The data was collected from the students of the university of Karachi. The sample size was 200. Chen Internet Addiction Questionnaire was used to record the data. In the study, 23% of the participants were male, while 77% were female. In our study, the participants conceded that their relationships as well as their performance in studies and jobs are affected by the excessive use internet. Internet addiction is considered highly prevalent in Pakistan's society and often lead to distress, anxiety, emotional and mental disturbances, and eating and sleep patterns disorders.
