Abstract
Concentric/concentric (Con/Con) knee extension (EX) and flexion (FLEX) isokinetic strength test at angular velocities of 60 o sn -1 , 180 o sn -1 and 240 o sn -1 were applied on the Dominant (DT) and Non-Dominant (NDT) sides of the subjects to calculate bilateral quadriceps/quadriceps (Q/Q) and ipsilateral hamstring/quadriceps (H/Q) ratios. Paired sample t-test was used in the comparison of DT and NDT strength and bilateral and ipsilateral strength ratios. When the subjects’ isokinetic knee EX and FLEX strengths were compared on DT and NDT sides at angular velocities of 60 o sn -1 , 180 o sn - 1 and 240 o sn -1 , statistical significance was found in favour of DT in EX phase of all 60 o sn -1 , 180 o sn -1 and 240 o sn -1 angular velocities (p<0,05). When lateral asymmetry ratios were examined, significance was found only at 60 o sn -1 angular velocity in the comparison of both ipsilateral H/Q and bilateral O/Q and H/H ratios (p<0,05). As a result, it was found that in elite football players, DT sides produced higher strength at all angular velocities when compared with NDT sides and both bilateral and ipsilateral strength differences were found at 60 o sn -1 angular velocity, which requires high strength. According to these results, it was found that tendency for injury was similar in football players for both extremities at high angular velocities which require speed but low strength, while both bilateral and ipsilateral asymmetric differences occurred at low angular velocity. Although statistically significant, the fact that asymmetric differences at 60 o sn-1 angular velocity were between 60-70% for ipsilateral and between 90-100% for bilateral as stated in the literature showed that football players were within the safe range for knee injuries.
