Relapse After a Period of Recovery

Abstract

Using alcohol or drugs after a period of recovery is called a lapse or a relapse. A lapse refers to the first episode of use, and may or may not lead to a relapse. A relapse refers to continued use of alcohol or drugs after the initial lapse. People with SUDs may lapse or relapse only once, several times, or many times. Although it is possible for anyone to get and stay sober, some people are at greater risk for relapse. It is best to view these people as struggling more than others who do better. Those who relapse are not bad but vulnerable people who have trouble controlling their use.
