Why Italians and Russians study the languages of each other, or culture as a motivation to learn a foreign language

Abstract

Целью данной работы является анализ основных мотивов, побуждающих русских и итальянцев выбирать для изучения языки друг друга. В истории российско-итальянских отношений последние 20 лет являются уникальным периодом: вслед за десятилетием (2003-2014) бурного развития общественно-экономических, туристических и культурных связей начинается постепенное ослабление контактов вплоть до открытой русофобии после начала специальной военной операции (СВО). Это позволяет увидеть не только сильную зависимость мотивов для выбора двух языков от общественно-политической ситуации в мире, выявить определяющие факторы влияния, но и сделать вывод о том, что независимо от внешних воздействий в парах «Россия-итальянский», «Италия-русский» культурно-познавательные мотивы всегда превалируют над прагматическими. Ситуация с СВО выявила особую значимость для итальянского национального сознания фактора культуры, который итальянцы готовы отстаивать в отношениях с русскими даже при отсутствии всех видов контактов. Осознание ценности русской культуры, по-видимому, будет оставаться главным мотивом и для выбора русского языка в столь неблагоприятный для сохранения дружеских отношений период, как нынешний. The purpose of this work is to analyze the main motives that prompt Russians and Italians to choose each other's languages for learning. In the history of Russian-Italian relations, the last 20 years constitute a unique period: after a decade (2003-2014) of intensive growth of socio-economic, touristic and cultural ties, the contacts gradually languished and, after the beginning of the special military operation (SMO), resulted in open Russophobia. Firstly, the analyzed data prove that the motives for choosing two languages strongly depend on the world socio-political issues. Secondly, there is a number of determining factors that influence motivation. Finally, the author can conclude that, regardless of external influences, cultural motives always prevail over pragmatic ones in the pairs “Russia-Italian” and “Italy-Russian”. In the progress of SMO, the cultural factor has revealed its special significance for the Italians. They have demonstrated their readiness to advocate the culture of Russia in the absence of all kinds of contacts with the country. The value of Russian culture seems to remain the main motive for choosing the Russian language even in a period as unfavorable for maintaining friendly relations as the present.
