Abstract

With the development of communication and information technology, new media have experienced extraordinary developments, the presence of cheap gadgets with applications that support the use of the internet and social media, increasingly enlivening cyber activity in Indonesia. Without waiting long and without censorship, any information can be spread massively through social media. The development of communication technology is not without its shortcomings. The ease of communicating in cyberspace is not always accompanied by good communication ethics. In the last five years in Indonesia, fake news/information (hoax) has emerged through social media indicating the purpose of slandering, discrediting certain parties, or even disguising the truth of certain religious teachings. The emergence of hoax news that is spread massively can potentially disturb the community and divide the nation's unity. To counteract the hoax news, it is necessary to disseminate information about related news, especially counseling to students and the general public. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, socialization activities are carried out through zoom meetings. The results of the socialization showed that the majority of respondents felt the benefits of information about hoax news socialization because they knew how to distinguish hoax news and non-hoax news, respondents also knew the characteristics of hoax news and how to filter hoax news.
