The typology of anomie and social support and differences in suicidal ideation by type in youths

Abstract

Despite the fact that suicide among young people is becoming a social problem, there are little empirical studies on the issue. In this study, latent profile analysis was used to classify current youth into latent profiles based on their level of anomie and social support, and logistic regression analysis was used to look at the differences in suicidal ideation between groups.‘High anomie/low support’(10.7%) was classed as having high anomie items and low social support components, ‘Moderate Anomie/support’(61.5%) was identified as having similarly moderate level of anomie and social support, and ‘Low Anomie/high Support’(27.8%) was categorised as having low anomie and high social support. The ‘High anomie/low support’ group had statistically higher suicidal ideation than the reference group, the ‘Low anomie/high support’ group. Based on the findings, suggestions were made on the need for social structural change and and the formation of social networks of the youths.
