Transgender Day of Remembrance

Abstract

In honor of Transgender Awareness Week and International Education Week, please join the LGBT Resource Center, the International Center and the Literature Department in a film screening of "Portland Street Blues" (Yip Wai Man, 1998). The film is a Hong Kong martial arts movie in the spirit of the wildly popular "Young and Dangerous" series. The film features a FTM-spectrum transgender main character and many action-packed gang ("triad") scenes, Hong Kong style! The program will conclude with a group discussion facilitated by Dr. Heinrich on the representation of transgender identity and sexual orientation in the film as discussed in the work of scholar Helen Hok-Sze Leung, whose book featuring a discussion of the film is on reserve in Geisel for the Fall course "LTEA110B." Students should try to read Leung's discussion first, if they can. In addition, Dr. Heinrich will be teaching a course on "Chinese Queer Cultures" on Tuesdays and Thursdays next quarter (LTEA110C). This course is open to all students and does not require you to speak or read Chinese (all the materials are accessible in English).
