Abstract
Earlier versions of the chapters in this volume were presented as papers at the inaugural conference of the National Civil War Centre at Newark Museum on 7–8 August 2015. The conference was organised by Andrew Hopper, Stewart Beale and Hannah Worthen of the University of Leicester and was attended by over ninety delegates. As well as this volume, the conference also provided the springboard for a successful temporary exhibition at the National Civil War Centre focused on the same theme and entitled ‘BattleScarred’. The exhibition ran in four rooms from March to October 2016, before being down-sized to two rooms for a further two years. Elements of it have since been made permanent. We are grateful to the National Civil War Centre for the title of this exhibition to lend its name to this volume. We are also grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for a grant to establish a Research Centre for Care, Welfare and Medicine during the British Civil Wars at the National Civil War Centre. For their helpful comments and criticisms, the editors are grateful to the editors and readers of the Politics, Society and Culture in Early Modern Britain series at Manchester University Press. We would like to thank Viscount De L’Isle for his kind permission to cite the Foulis Manuscripts from his private collection. We are also grateful to the University of Leicester, Springhead Brewery and to the journal Midland History for grants that supported the inaugural conference of the National Civil War Centre. We would also like to thank Glyn Hughes, Team Leader for Collections, Kevin Winter, Exhibition and Collections Assistant and Carol King, Learning and Participation Officer at the National Civil War Centre, for their valuable assistance with organising the conference and exhibition from which this volume arose.
