Abstract

We examine the uplink performance of MIMO systems in UTRA FDD mode using analytical tools and simulations. Results show that the uplink performance of the UTRA FDD mode is significantly improved by SIMO and MIMO techniques. While the performance increase from additional receive antennas in the base station reflects straightforwardly to the results, the diversity gain from additional transmit antennas at the mobile end is small. Thus, multiple transmit antennas should be used for spatial multiplexing instead of diversity.
