Abstract

In this research, the aim was to investigate copyright and translated wordless books (10 books) published by publishers in Turkey in terms of quality and to investigate the stories created by preschool children based on the wordless books. Participants consist of 18 children aged 48-62 and attending pre-school education institutions. Designed according to the qualitative research method, the study used document analysis and interview techniques for data collection. Findings related to the quality of wordless books showed positive features relative to children with low numbers of characters who were mainly animals or small children, reflection of emotions in character’s gestures and facial expressions and motion in the pictures. When the stories created by the children are assessed in terms of language and expression, children’s explanations comprised minimum 8 and maximum 23 sentences, they did not give detailed information about the main character, and included very limited dialogue between characters. Additionally, most children used unique expressions in their explanations and were revealed to explain the story with introduction, development and conclusion. The results are discussed in the context of the quality of the wordless books and the reflection of the children’s language features in these books.
