Abstract

The equipment management of police departments is usually carried out manually, causing delays and issues as missing items or wrong assignments. Improvements can come from radiofrequency identification (RFID), successfully employed worldwide for inventory management. The use of IoT (internet of things) systems to make police forces equipment management more efficient is currently under research. This contribution summarizes a feasibility study on the employment of COTS RFID systems on several kinds of equipment comprising both laboratory and in-situ tests. Effective tag types and integration positions are experimentally selected. Overall, the use of RFID for police equipment management is promising, and the measured reading distances span from 0.6 m to 16.1 m.
