Abstract

The utilization of renewable energy resources intimately relate to sustainable development. Rapid increase in population and industrial development have propelled water resources to the forefront of challenges facing modern societies. Water covers about two thirds of the earth's surface; <1% is suitable for domestic and industrial use. In this study a work has been made to present a review, in brief, work of the highlights that have been achieved during the recent years world-wide and the state-of-the-art for most important efforts in the field of desalination by renewable energies, with emphasis on technologies and economics. This paper focuses on water sources, power demands and availability of potable water and purification methods that can be implemented in various remote islands in Singapore. A comparative study has been done to power the desalination plant using various renewable energy technologies. Solar powered RO desalination can possibly fill the belief of currently used desalination on fossil fuels, reduced operational costs, and improved environmental sustainability.
