The Ottoman military organization in the province: The case study of the Vučitrn Sanjak in 1544/5

Abstract

The paper provides an overview of the Ottoman military organization in the province using the example of the Vučitrn Sanjak. The data presented in the paper are the result of the analysis of the detailed tax register (müfassal defteri) of the Vučitrn Sanjak from 1544/5. Special emphasis has been put on the timar cavalry and the structure of the timar system, in order to determine the approximate military potential available to the Vučitrn Sanjakbey. Furthermore, the local military and auxiliary units that were an integral part of the Ottoman military system in the province are presented.
