Punishment, Prisons, and the Visual

Abstract

This chapter notes the ways in which the prison has been a key conceptual site in the development of visual criminology. Describing the major trends in the field, the chapter takes up prison architecture, carceral (in)visibility, and the various ways in which punishment outside of the prison is constituted and enacted visually. The chapter concludes with some thoughts on the imaginative visualities of prison abolition.
