Abstract

Power loss of microwave and millimeter wave antenna signals after their transmission through fiber links with intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) on the basis of both direct modulation (IMDD-DM) of laser diode and external modulation (IMDD-EM) of laser light in modulator are estimated. Noise figure dependencies at the output of microwave IMDD fiber links are calculated and illustrated graphically. Methods are described to completely solve the problem of big insertion loss, to achieve not only loss compensation, but to make IMDD fiber links with intrinsic gain of input microwave and millimeter wave signal without additional optical or electronic amplifiers.
