The English translations of The Tale of Genji had become a tool for the people surround the World to enjoy reading The Tale of Genji although they cannot speak or read Japanese. We cannot take lightly the role of translation. Regarding to the translation issue, it is also important to know closely about the translators’ perspective towards The Tale of Genji. Since the major translators of The Tale of Genji are Western, it is imperative to know Westerns’ perspectives towards Easterns since The Tale of Genji came from Asian. With the purpose to resolve this case, the analysis of this paper uses Orientalism as its theoretical concept in examining the Westerns’ perspective towards The Tale of Genji through the translation. Abstract

This paper is to discuss the “Orientalism” in The Tale of Genji as world literature through the translations of The Tale of Genji that had been translated into English by the Westerns. 本文以西方翻译的《源氏物语》为例,探讨《源氏物语》作为世界文学的“东方主义”。《源氏物语》的流行离不开翻译的重要作用。《源氏物语》的英译本已经成为世界各地的人们享受阅读《源氏物语》的工具,尽管他们不会说或读日语。我们不能轻视翻译的作用。关于《源氏物语》的翻译问题,了解译者对《源氏物语》的看法也很重要。既然《源氏物语》的主要译者是西方人,那么,既然《源氏物语》来自亚洲,我们就有必要了解西方人对东方人的看法。为了解决这一问题,本文的分析以东方主义为理论概念,通过翻译考察西方人对《源氏物语》的看法。本文还探讨了《源氏物语》的翻译是如何容易被接受为世界文学的。
