Abstract

The population dynamics of the insect European Corn Borer have been simulated using discrete event simulation. Discrete system simulation offers several advantages over continuous simulation. Discrete simulations are homomorphic with the life cycle of the insect and are less computationally complex. Discrete simulation also offers the advantages of waiting time distributions and scaling for widely varying populations. The simulation was used to determine the optimum time to apply insecticide to reduce destructive pest stages. The sensitivity study found that the optimal time to apply insecticide was to several early stages of the first generation of the insect.
