Abstract
The improved Canny algorithm was presented about the issue of weak signal in a MODIS remote sensing image on oceanic internal waves. First, the threshold method was used to filter out the noise of the remote sensing image. Second, the Canny algorithm was used to detect edges and then edges of some oceanic internal wave crests were thinned. At last, the curves were determined by straight-line fitting equation. The propagation directions were obtained from north by west 47°to 76° in the northeast of Dongsha Islands. The range of wavelengths in the examples was from 1.1 to 3.5km. The result indicated two points. The first one was that the MODIS remote sensing image whose resolution was 250m could be used to study oceanic internal waves. The second one was that the improved Canny algorithm adopted to extract parameters of oceanic internal waves was feasible.
