Abstract
This paper presents the development of a single-phase Active Power Filter (APF) to counteract harmonic currents which generated from a non-linear load. In this work, a single-phase Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) is used to rectify the pulsating nature of a distorted supply current generated by the non-linear load. Hence, the supply current becomes continuous, sinusoidal and in phase with a supply voltage waveform. Furthermore, it reduces the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) level of the supply current, improve power factor and the quality of the power supply system. The VSI consists of 4 Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) drive by an Active Pulse Width Modulation (APWM) technique. The APWM is generated using a Current Control Loop (CCL). This closed loop controller is constructed using a subtractor circuit, Proportional-Integral (PI) controller and a comparator circuit. The harmonic spectrum of the supply current waveform is compared with the IEEE 519 Standard. The simulation results have shown that the proposed APF based on VSI topology can improve the harmonic spectrums of the supply current according to the acceptance limit defined by the IEEE 519 Standard. Selected simulation results are presented to verify proposed operation.
