Slab Waveguide Three-Level Model For An Optical Amplifier

Abstract

Continuous wave optical amplification in a slab waveguide can be simulated by means of the scalar Beam Propagation Method, taking in account signal and pump field propagahon through t,he waveguide. We nsed a t,hree-level scheme for the pump ~ amplification process, which reproduces the main experimental features of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers pumped at 1.48pm, as reported by the COST 217 Project Group, for both short and long amplifier lengths. An alternative procedure, ablr t o reduce computational time by a large factor, is presented.
