Abstract

SOME of the current methods of removing cerumen from the ear have various disadvantages. The large stainless steel syringe is cumbersome. The pressure varies from 3 psi to more than 110 psi, depending on the manual force applied. The tip is wide enough to engage the canal completely, giving rise to extremely high hydrostatic pressure against the tympanic membrane. Because of the necessity of forcing the plunger, the tip often waves about and may abrade the canal. The center of gravity is distant from the finger grip, which also causes undesirable movement of the tip within the canal.
