Despite this, treating advanced disease remains difficult and there is a need to identify new therapeutic targets. Proteins encoded by the q-arm of chromosome 1 are of particular interest as regions of 1q are frequently amplified and over expressed in breast cancer leading to the hypothesis that 1q is important in disease development and progression [1-3]. The frequency at which regions of arm 1q were amplified was investigated and the 1q42.12 locus was found to be amplified in both breast cancer cell lines and primary tumours with a number of genes in or near this region also being over expressed [4].
