Inspired by these discussions the article looks at Joachim von Sandrart’s monumental publication Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau- Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste. It presents an ever-amazing quantity of contemporary knowledge and has often been described as a compilation, lacking theoretical power. In contrast, the following essay argues that it may open new perspectives to observe practices of composing, especially regarding the images. There is a harmonizing tendency in the idea of composing – the expression bellum componere means: ending the war.
