Une nouvelle approche de l’opposition ici/là et ovde/tu

EnglishThis paper claims that the French adverb la has the typical properties of regular definite NPs, including their weak readings, whereas ici is an indexical which can easily get a demonstrative use because of its spatial content. It establishes, thus, a link between the semantics of these adverbs and the semantics of regular NPs containing a determiner and a nominal head. It aims at explaining the observed differences from the properties which distinguish three types of expresssions : indexicals, demonstrative and definites. It shows, moreover, that the proposal can be extended to other languages by discussing its application to Serbian and to the opposition tu/ovde. francaisCet article montre que l’adverbe francais la possede les proprietes interpretatives des groupes nominaux definis, y compris leurs emplois faibles, alors que ici est un deictique dont l’usage demonstratif est possible et frequent en raison de son contenu spatial. Il relie donc l’usage de ces adverbes au fonctionnement des groupes nominaux ordinaires, munis d’un determinant, et tente d’expliquer les differences d’emploi observees a partir des proprietes qui opposent trois grandes categories d’expressions : les deictiques, les demonstratifs et les definis. On montre en outre que cette proposition peut etre etendue a d’autres langues en discutant en detail son extension au serbe et a l’opposition tu/ovde.
