That is based on that different materials have different attenuation coefficient ratios of high energy x-ray to low energy x-ray. We apply this principle to different materials in soft tissues with different average atomic number, it can further separate image of different tissues such as lung tissue and connective tissue like bronchus. Multiple decomposition technique for dual energy x-ray image
