College Mentoring Programs

Michael is a student with a learning disability who just graduated from high school. He worked really hard to keep his grades up and was thrilled to be accepted to a large university about 150 miles from his hometown. Michael plans to major in graphic design. After a summer of working and spending time with friends and family, Michael is excited to move into the dorm. His parents help him move in and wish him well. He meets his roommate, but they don't have much in common. Within the first few weeks of class, Michael and his roommate are barely speaking because they argue about the type of music and TV in the room and when to have people in the room. Michael decides to go to the local mall for something to do ... only he takes the wrong bus and never gets there. He then decides he can manage without leaving campus—it will be much easier. Michael enjoys his psychology class, but he is really struggling with his English 101 class. He failed his first paper. He isn't sure what to do on the next paper, but he decided he will just hope for the best. Michael finds himself thinking about how much easier it would be if he just moved back home and worked at his uncle's restaurant.
