Oxidative stress can favor high concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and free radicals are associated with antioxidant metabolism. The human enzyme paraoxonase (PON) contributes to antioxidant metabolism and decreased antioxidant levels. This leads to a high-risk factor for coronary heart disease.
