Primary Frequency Control for Wind/Battery Stand-Alone Microgrid
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is one of the solutions being proposed to improve the performance and reliability of various power system applications. Indeed, BESS is a reliable resource to provide energy, and to increase the reliability and flexibility of the renewable energy dispatch. Wind energy has the largest contribution among renewable energy resources and its control has become a research focus in the power systems area. This paper introduces a novel BESS control, which depends on a Fuzzy-Logic based Frequency Regulation (FL-FR) for wind farms composed of 5 Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) augmented with BESS. Moreover, rotor speed of the deloaded WTG is optimized to extract more rotational kinetic energy. WTG can ensure sufficient generation reserve using deloaded operation, which can be used during depressed frequency conditions. The performance of the studied system is proved through simulation in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
