The deterioration rate of railway infrastructure and track geometry increases during their life cycle, and the performance of maintenance activities decreases over time. The average age of tracks in Serbia is over 50 years old, which requires exceptional knowledge and skill of the Infrastructure Manager to adapt the maintenance strategy to the infrastructure condition and achieve safe traffic. Every subsequent derailment on the railway network in Serbia indicates the need to adapt the technical regulation and maintenance strategy to the condition of the infrastructure. The paper presents the requirements and suggestions of the harmonized European standards for managing track geometry quality. It points out the need to adapt the prescribed and recommended limit values to the state of the railway infrastructure.
