The paper provides an overview of the Hungarian constitutional and international legislation regarding using individual names in national minority languages. It also introduces the current legislative and institutional framework of birth registration in nationality languages in Hungary. The topics of the present discussion include the general questions regarding proper name use in minority languages; the procedural, professional and technical conditions of birth registration; the relevant tasks and authority of the minority self-governing bodies; the legal aspects of minority name change; and the use of family and first names in nationality languages in official documents in Hungary.
