He served as a member of the 13th National People's Congress Standing Committee, and of the 14th Central Committee of Jiusan Society. He also served as the chief scientist of China's first Mars exploration mission, Tianwen-1, and the director of the Key Laboratory of Earth and Planetary Physics of the CAS. His passing is a great loss to the science community. 2020年5月20日,世界著名的空间科学家、行星物理学家、中国科学院地质与地球物理研究所万卫星教授逝世,享年62岁。万教授曾任中国科学院院士。他曾担任第十三届全国人民代表大会常务委员会委员和第十四届九三学会中央委员会委员。他还担任过中国首个火星探测任务“天文一号”的首席科学家,以及中国科学院地球与行星物理重点实验室主任。他的去世是科学界的巨大损失。这篇文章是专门为纪念他而写的。
