In addition, there is a global shift toward calorie-dense and nutrient-poor food patterns. Although global poverty has decreased, the prevalence of diabetes among rural areas has increased; as the number of people with diabetes is now at 422 million people worldwide, there is an immediate need to address food patterns/diets and lifestyles.
