The developmental stages and basic concepts of sociolinguistics are analysed, and the trends and methods of modern sociolinguistic researches are presented. The mutual influences of language and society are demonstrated and the legal status of the state language in Ukraine is analysed.Podstawowe pojęcia, problemy i tendencje rozwojowe współczesnej socjolingwistyki zawarte w „Sotsiolinhvistychnyĭ kompendium” (Kompendium socjolingwistyczne), pod redakcją Heleny Krasowskiej, Oleksiya Sukhomlynova i Petro Sygedy (Kijów: Talkom, 2020. ss. 336)W recenzji przedstawiono prace międzynarodowego zespołu badaczy poświęcone rzetelnemu opisowi problemów współczesnej socjolingwistyki. Opis ten obejmuje etapy rozwoju i podstawowe pojęcia socjolingwistyki oraz tendencje i metody współczesnych badań socjolingwistycznych, a ponadto – wzajemne wpływy języka i społeczeństwa oraz status prawny języka państwowego na Ukrainie.
