The School Library: An Important Place for Adolescents’ Well-Being.
Abstract The present study focuses on the diverse relationships between middle-school students and their school library. Students between the ages of 10 and 15 were observed in an urban French middle school during an ethnographic experience. The results show the importance of the school library as a refuge for marginalized, younger, and/or feel bad students as well as those who like to read. The library also contributes to student well-being by acting as a bulwark against the cold and agitation of the playground. The recommendations call on school administrators to recognize the importance of the school library to adolescents and to provide ongoing access.
