Objectives
The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the functional appliance of Cervera-Bracco (FACB) in the treatment of Class II division 2 malocclusion. Our analysis considered the structural properties of the FACB, as well as the cephalometric parameters it modifies.
Materials and methods
The FACB was used in 30 patients (19 males, 11 females) with dentoskeletal deep bites. Laterolateral teleradiographs were obtained at the beginning and at the end of the functional treatment, and the following aspects were analyzed: the divergence angle (SNA^GoMe), the vertical sensibility angle (SNA-SNP^GoMe), the Schudy angle (PO^GoMe), the interincisal angle (Inc.Sup.^Inc.Inf.), the gonial angle (Ar^GoMe) – which can be divided into upper and lower semiangles (Ar^GoNa and Na^GoMe, respectively) – and the ratio of posterior facial height to anterior facial height (SGo^NaMe).
Results
Comparison of pre- and post-functional treatment cephalometric data revealed the following: (1) marked reduction of the interincisal angle (Inc.Sup.^Inc.Inf.) in 66% of the patients; (2) increases in the divergence (NaS^GoMe), Schudy (PO^GoMe), and vertical sensibility (SNP-SNA^GoMe) angles; (3) equilibrium between cases presenting reductions vs. increase in the gonial angle (Ar^GoMe) and its upper (Ar^GoNa) and lower (Na^GoMe) components, with a higher frequency of increase involving the lower semiangle; (4) an increase or no change in the ratio of posterior facial height to anterior facial height (SGo/NaMe).
Conclusions
Orthopedic/orthodontic treatment of Class II division 2 malocclusion with the FACB produced valid results in many patients.
