Latin America and the awakening in Cuba of a new social class, the criollos, Plácido recreates the life of literary characters such as Chactas, Cora and Atala in romantic settings, in which love and race are mixed, along with the topic of civilization and barbarity. This characteristic of his poems is important, because it draws attention to the prohibition in Cuba at the time against unequal marriages, marriages between blacks and whites, and Plácido’s endorsement of those can be interpreted as a criticism of Spain.
