This review presents the characteristics of our recently identified key enzyme, 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone precursor synthase (PECPS), which generates the common precursor of 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones (PECs), the main fragrances in agarwood, as well as our reasoning to reach these conclusions.
