The possibilities of using visual illusions as the main elements of composition in illustration are considered; revealed their ability to concentrate in illustrating all its functions, which makes it possible to ensure the integrity of both the composition and the entire ensemble of the book.The illusions of vision type were studied: dual images; ratio of shape and background; illusions of depth perception; impossible figures; inverted pictures; pattern recognition — for the purpose of their use in illustration practice.Indicators are identified that affect the quality and harmony of illustrations created using visual illusions. These include: the time for recognizing illusions, which reflects how much visual illusions used in the illustrations are understandable to the reader; the effect of perception and expediency, which reflect the aesthetic functions of the pictorial material, and how much the illustrations are associated with the context by which the selected images were analyzed using the expert estimation method.The priority of such an indicator as the time of illusion detection has been established. Optimal, from the point of view of the influence of this and integral indicators, are images using visual illusions of the ‘inverted picture’ type. The second, according to these indicators, are images with the illusions of depth perception, and the third in this list are the illusions of the ‘dual pictures’ type.The maximum points for other indicators have: the perception effect — images in which illusions like ‘dual pictures’ are used, in second place is pattern recognition; and, if appropriate, images with illusions of the type of ‘dual pictures’, then the illusions of perception of depth and the illusions of the type of ‘inverted pictures’.Designed illustrations using visual illusions, dual images; ratio of shape and background; illusions of depth perception; impossible figures; inverted pictures; pattern recognition can be the main element in the successful design of publications, by creating an exciting structure and rhythm.
