Two first doctoral theses on Chinese medicine were defended in Poland in the 1930s. Medical acupuncture was introduced in 1978 and taught by Prof. Zbigniew Garnuszewski in Warsaw and officially recognized. The real traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) education started in 1986 in Krakow and after some years of private education the first TCM school was established. In Poland, education in TCM is not regulated until now and different TCM schools have their own curriculum, level and duration of education. There are six associations for acupunture and TCM in Poland. Two of them are really active. TCM and acupuncture are not regulated by Polish law, but they are not prohibited. Acupuncturists as well as herbalist-phytotherapists are officially recognized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. TCM can be practiced clinically by anyone and is not controlled by any professional TCM authorities. The number of TCM clinics is growing all over Poland due to the weakness of the public health system.
