Review of till geochemistry and indicator mineral methods for mineral exploration in glaciated terrain
Since the 1970s, till geochemical and indicator mineral methods for mineral exploration, provenance studies and environmental research in glaciated terrain have been developed, tested, and refined. This paper summarizes these methods, focussing on field and laboratory methods for till geochemical, indicator mineral, and boulder surveys. This review of protocols is meant to be a guide for the mineral exploration industry and publicly funded agencies. The paper summarizes till as a sample medium, describes the formation of glacial dispersal trains, and methods for till sample collection, sample processing, matrix geochemistry, indicator mineral analyses, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures, and data reporting and interpretation. The methods described here can be used to conduct reconnaissance- to deposit-scale till sampling surveys to assess mineral resource potential and establish environmental baselines. Thematic collection: This article is part of the Reviews in Exploration Geochemistry collection available at: https://www.lyellcollection.org/topic/collections/reviews-in-exploration-geochemistry Supplementary material: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.6786087

Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis (GEEA) is a co-owned journal of the Geological Society of London and the Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG). GEEA focuses on mineral exploration using geochemistry; related fields also covered include geoanalysis, the development of methods and techniques used to analyse geochemical materials such as rocks, soils, sediments, waters and vegetation, and environmental issues associated with mining and source apportionment. GEEA is well-known for its thematic sets on hot topics and regularly publishes papers from the biennial International Applied Geochemistry Symposium (IAGS). Papers that seek to integrate geological, geochemical and geophysical methods of exploration are particularly welcome, as are those that concern geochemical mapping and those that comprise case histories. Given the many links between exploration and environmental geochemistry, the journal encourages the exchange of concepts and data; in particular, to differentiate various sources of elements. GEEA publishes research articles; discussion papers; book reviews; editorial content and thematic sets.
