Preliminary Report on Avifaunal Diversity of Poonch District in Pir Panjal Himalaya, Jammu and Kashmir, India

An avifaunal survey was conducted in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir for five months starting from June to October 2022. The investigation revealed a rich avian diversity with a total of 36 species belonging to 11 orders and 24 families. Most of the birds were either perching or passerine type. Due to its distinct climatic and dense forest cover, Poonch has been home to many native as well as migratory birds. The area offers protection to the avian species, and the weather conditions are ideal for several migratory birds. The common species observed in this region are Himalayan bulbul, Brown rock chat, Bush chat, Egret and many more. Increased anthropogenic influence has led to decline in the native as well as migratory species in this area. Bird’s protection and management practices at the ground level need to be imposed for their conservation in this area.
