Abdelwahab Meddeb, or the Plenitude of Heterology

Abstract:Abdelwahab Meddeb has passionately evoked the subjective and existential confluence that brings together on the one hand Sufi writings by Hallaj and Sohrawardi, and the thought of philosophers of postmodernity like Nietzsche, Bataille, or Derrida on the other. As “mystical” thinkers, the latter indeed posited the philosophical precedence of subjective experience (both inner and existential) over the authority of institutional doxa. The article first introduces the reinterpretation of the passion of Hallaj’s mysticism that Meddeb made in 1983. It then turns to the circulatory, heterological conception of knowledge Meddeb advocated in subsequent writings. It finally analyzes the expression of mysticism repurposed through the experience of ontological enactment as it unfolds for instance in “La tache blanche”, one of the eleven texts of Aya dans les villes (1999).Abstract:Abdelwahab Meddeb a évoqué avec passion la confluence subjective et existentielle qui rapproche, d’une part, des écrits soufis tels que ceux de Hallaj et Sohrawardi, et, d’autre part, la pensée des philosophes de la postmodernité comme Nietzsche, Bataille ou Derrida. En penseurs « mystiques », ces derniers avancèrent justement la préséance de l’expérience subjective (à la fois intérieure et existentielle) sur l’autorité de la doxa institutionnelle. L’article introduit tout d’abord la réinterprétation du mysticisme de Hallaj qu’effectua Meddeb en 1983. Il se tourne ensuite vers la conception circulatoire, hétérologique de la connaissance que prônera Meddeb par la suite. Il analyse enfin l’expression d’un mysticisme reformulé à travers l’expérience de l’actualisation ontologique telle qu’elle se déroule par exemple dans « La tache blanche », l’un des onze textes d’Aya dans les villes (1999).
